Take only toll roads, do not go in a new/expensive car, do not bring
pedigreed pets, do not wear expensive clothes or jewelry. Mexico
can be dangerous if you ignorantly flaunt wealth.
Learn some Spanish ..pardon me…thank you etc.
If you hvae to violate any of these rules, take a bus instead or fly.

Actually i’m considering a drive soon to Leon, Guanajuato. So i hope this question gets answered. I would assume driving only during the day is a must and toll-roads as well. If I were to do it i would stop only in major cities for the nights and stay in major hotel chains. I would imagine it would take 3 days or so, good luck!
