It is my understanding that Mexico is going to be able to commute to America hauling merchandise via trucks. They will be here tomarrow. They do not fall under US and State guidelines. Isn’t this opening the gates for terrorists and more illegal immigrants?

  7. I think the lack of safety standards in MX presents serious risks to other drivers.

  8. Canadians have been able to for years. If the Mexican truck drivers can read English and follow our laws, they should be allowed the same rights as Canadians.

  13. Yes, and you know that the trucks will be carrying illegals, drugs , and god knows what else. The thing that makes me the maddest is that this is going to gut our trucking and ports industries

  14. I think we should start a human road block and scare the hell out of these drivers were they don’t come. They would get the message from a angry mob. just my opinion

  15. Forget about the whole terrorist issues. What about our jobs? This is to save money for corporation importing stuff from Mexico, so they do not have to pay American driver to hall it. Why have we not heard more outrage from the Teamsters Union and other Unions for that matter? 30 years ago this would have never been allowed to happen.

America we need to stand up for ourselves!!!!

  17. This is a REQUIREMENT of NAFTA as signed by President Clinton. I don’t have a problem with it so long as the vehicles meet our safety and insurance standards, required permits for any particular cargo and state permits for the states that they will transit, just like the US truckers do and the drivers have work visas and the cargo is inspected at the port of entry. We are in a global economy and as such have to facilitate efficient inport and export of products.

    Comment by Jim — September 15, 2008 @ 12:35 pm

  18. terrorists - I really doubt that.

but, it will be bad for our truckers.
I support our truckers and I think the rules should stay the same.

  19. This is so funny to me that this is a concern. NOt to long ago the El Paso highway 20 was virtually left open and truckers delivering produce has been coming throught that way since the beginning of time. They said because of the terriorist activity we need to have closer watch over this check point.
They are supose to get papers when they cross and they didn’t have any. Showing that for a while it was virtually an open door. It would be so easy for anyone wether immigrant or terriorist to come into this country.
OUt of Mexico every day goes hundreds of fishing boats.
The coastline is virtually open from Texas to florida.
Especially in New Orleans no one is watching the ports.
No one ever mentions the fishing boats? Maybe Mexicans keeps it quiet so it won’t get shut down. But building a wall or closing a check point is nothing more than a joke.
Most Mexicans are for it because most likely they will all get jobs doing the building.

  21. Yes it may seem. As all this is going on remember that the United States is also creating ways to catch who ever is trying to do some thing illegal. I believe that the truckers are just doing their job and trying to make some kind of income to feed their families. I don’t say all are doing this but some do. You know there is no real way that every thing can be stopped. There are more Americans that are finding ways to help bring over drugs…That is what hurts the most, Don’t you think?

    Comment by Bigeyes — September 22, 2008 @ 4:57 pm

  22. Do Canadian trucks travel on our roads? Are they are terrorist threat? I’m pretty sure they will still have to go through some sort of border crossing. How else are they supposed to bring merchandise into the country? European truckers cross borders all the time. I really don’t get the connection between Mexico and terrorism. Sounds like more of a racial issue against Latinos than any real issue about national security.

    Comment by luckythirteen — September 23, 2008 @ 3:41 am

  23. No one here is thinking of the obvious. They don’t maintain their trucks to our standards. Knowing America, we won’t impose the same standards on Mexican trucks as we do our own. Regardless they will plug up the weigh scales getting inspected and put out of service for safety violations if we do make them do the same safety requirements. Will they do their log books right? will they have DOT audits like the rest of us? Where do we find them when there is a DOT audit. OH Pedro is gone today, bla bla bla. I know we need drivers in America but make them drive for American companies then. lat’s make money off them and make sure the trucks and safety are up to standards so we all don’t have to fear for our lives.

Human smuggling will be at an all time high.
It will cause more problems than we can count

    Comment by Elizzabeth — September 26, 2008 @ 12:11 pm

  25. There are a few faults in your question.
    1. They will fall under US and state guidelines because they are traveling on US and state roads.
    2. If this is opening the door for terrorists then why not close the door from Canada?
I think the roads are just that, roads not American or Mexican, just roads.

    Comment by H&GP W — September 27, 2008 @ 11:43 pm

  26. I don’t like it because it’s contradictory to what the government said about Homeland Security but not because Mexicans are involved. For both borders (Mex and Can) trucks should be limited in the distance they can travel in the US and should be monitored be a GPS system to insure the route they are going among other security measures once in the US.
That’s a big task but you can’t outsource everything and expect nothing to happen.

    Comment by cjgt2 — October 1, 2008 @ 3:40 am

  27. That’s the plan Stan. Keep the people of America in fear of terrorist attacks. Especially when the biggest terrorists sit in the first and second seats of the white house administration. Called commander in chief, and hir right hand man VP. Need to continue to steal as much money from the tax payers as they can while still in office you know. After all, this is how Gran-daddy Bush stole $1.5 Billion dollars and put it in a trust fund for Daddy Bush Sr. And since this is the way this Bush has always aquired money from the tax payers for his bad business deals. Beings this Bush is unlikely to see any of the money the old man has stashed, he must steal as much as he can for himself, and his crooked friends. Even the ones in Canada, and Mexico.

If the trucks do not fall under US and State guidelines, then they won’t mind having their tires shot out from under them will they.

We are after all applying our legal rights to protect our country and nation, when a President without a spine won’t use his authority, and power to protect this nation. He swore to uphold the laws of this nation, and the constitution. Do you see that happening

    Comment by Quit_Thinking — October 1, 2008 @ 12:24 pm

  28. I am against it. I think the Congressional resolution about it was totally ignored by Bush (real surprise) and he may well regret it. This is an end run around very expensive security we are funding for our ports and expensive to comply with requirements for our trucks and truckers, and is not in the best interest of our country’s workers, at all.

    Comment by DAR — October 4, 2008 @ 5:42 pm

  29. I think we are going to see our problems substantially increase. Unless the government plans to do a complete check of every single truck that passes our border from cab to bumper we are going to see an increase in drugs, illegal immigrants, etc.

I also think there will be many accidents due to lack of inspection and maintenance on these vehicles and I feel bad for the people who live in the communities in which these trucks will be passing.

    Comment by Rabid Frog — October 5, 2008 @ 4:33 am

  30. Sure. Now instead of sneaking across the border, then can just load up a semi full and bring them over the border into the U.S. Some of that “merchandise” will likely be illegal drugs, too.

    Comment by Denise J — October 7, 2008 @ 10:28 am

  31. IT IS WRONG!

We have no idea what is in those trucks, including people. Can you imagine what a killing a coyote would make with a truck load of illegals?

Pro-illegal people keep saying that the illegal aliens are take jobs that Americans don’t want. While I think that’s a pile of horse poo, the Mexican truckers are taking jobs Americans currently have!

This is another example of how Jorge Bush is an idiot, Congress is out of touch and that they care more about Mexico than America!

    Comment by amnesty sucks — October 10, 2008 @ 10:18 pm

  32. Let’s be honest. Nobody really wants to share the road with US truckers. Tell me your life doesn’t flash before your eyes when you are stuck between two 18-wheelers on a freeway. If they have to follow the same guidelines as US truckers (which they do) I don’t see how Mexican truckers could be any worse than what we have.

    Comment by Matt W — October 11, 2008 @ 6:44 am

  33. It will definitely open us up to more terrorist threats. Why build a wall to keep illegals out, if we’re just gonna let them come in by the truckload! Their trucks, according to what I’ve been told, haven’t even been cleared or insured to operate in our country. What if they get into an accident and kill innocent Americans. What then? It seems as if this country takes three steps back for every two steps forward. Obviously we’ve learned nothing since 9-11-01.
