What does Mexico get in return for the 1000s of deaths caused by fighting drugs headed to the US?

1000s of Mexicans die each year because it’s illegal to ship drugs to the US.
1000s of Mexicans die each year because it’s illegal to ship drugs to the US.
But, Americans use ungodly amounts of drugs and puts only a small fraction of drug users in jail.
Why does Mexico bother trying to stop it? Why would they care if drugs make it to the US?
