The first and most important thing to look in to is: "who will buy your product?" I would recommending finding that out first before doing anything else. You may need to start by getting samples of the product and taking it to possible distributors or retailers and giving them a sales pitch on it. To do that, you may need to figure out the cost you need to sell each product for.

Edible goods is a little more difficult than importing any other type of goods because you're on a strict deadline--that is when the food goes bad. Also, you will have several U.S. standards and tests that will be required that likely aren't required in mexico. That includes packaging, labeling, and even processing the food. Depending on the food there could be a lot of U.S. restrictions that will make it difficult to import.

Once you've figured out the food/packaging requirements for importing to the U.S. then you need to find out about import tax and transfer. You can outsource this to someone to take care of for you, but it can be very expensive.

Then you need to streemline shipping from the source to the destination.
