Passports but its too late to get one by Christmas if you don’t already have one. If your citizenship could be questioned, I would also bring notarized copies of important papers that also state you are an American citizen. Laws & regulations for border crossing for citizen & non citizens are available from both governments. I would read up. Going into Mexico will not be a problem getting back easily into the country is where you would encounter problems.

Passports are NOT required for American citizens traveling to and from Mexico until June 1, 2009. Children under 18 need their birth certificates. Adults need a photo I.D. and proof of American citizenship. Since you were not born in the U.S., you will need to carry your NATURALIZATION CERTIFICATE. If the children’s other parent is not going with you also, you must carry a letter of permission for each child, signed by the other parent and notarized. See 2nd site below and read section on MINORS under “Entry Requirements.” Before next June, you will all need to get passports to use for future travel. See 3rd site for all passport application info for when you are ready to apply.

You must have a passport to come back into the US. If you don’t have that you need your birth certificate. Drivers license is no good anymore. Make sure you don’t end up stuck in Mexico. I would call the Border Patrol and ask them what you need and to make sure everything you have is up to date.

3 things you should have:
1. Drivers license
2. Proof of Citizenship
3. Auto Insurance (Mexican)
Check also with your local Mexican consulate for more information.

Don’t forget to get permission for your car. You can do it online ( ) or you can do it in person in the aduana(?)
