January is not a prime time for cruising for families with children. There will be more "mature" adults cruising at that time, or people who can take off then and don't want to be bothered by kids. It was my first cruise so I wasn't sure what to expect. We had stops in Acapulco, Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa, Puerto Vallerta and Cabo San Lucas. I understand that they are not going to Acapulco in 2009. In Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa i went on the jungle horse ride from the criuse line it was wonderful and still had time to shop and party in town.. Pretty much every ship will have the activities you're looking for. For a short cruise, Carnival runs 4-dayers to Ensenada and the Yucatan Peninsula that are fun.
