The cost of many goods are cheaper in Mexico, with the exception of electronics I am told. You can get about 10 pesos for 1 dollar, which helps your purchasing power. Mexico also has slightly cheaper gas because they produce a lot of oil.

Hmmm...I don't know any Americans making a run for the border, most avoid the place like the plague.
How do you know they're Americans before you even speak with them and why would you walk up to strangers to ask why they are in mexico? Your story sounds a bit made up to me.

I like Mexico and I like Mexicans. Mexico is a wonderful place to visit.
---------------------
Ultimately, the solution is going to be more immigration the other way. As baby boomers continue to retire in the United States, it seems only natural that many of them should retire in Mexico, where the cost of living is lower and it is warmer. That will create more jobs in Mexico.
---------------------
What bothers me is that, southwest, southeast, and northwest USA all grew faster than the country of Mexico in the 1990's. In 20 years the growth rates of USA and Mexico will be the same. By the year 2050, the census department predicts that the growth rate of USA will be triple that of Mexico. By then the total fertility rate of the USA will be higher than every country in the western hemisphere except Haiti and Paraguay.
---------------------
It isn't healthy for either country to keep this up. In the 1950's Latin America had the fastest growing population in the world. One hundred years later, it looks like the growth rate in the USA will exceed the growth rate in all but a few small countries in Latin america.

Here's the most shocking fact about those Americans crossing the border to go into Mexico, they're doing it by LEGAL means. I know it's hard to believe in this day and age but yes virtually every American who crosses the border into Mexico does so at a legal point of entry, has the proper identification and GASP plans on returning back to the USA in a timely manner.

Lately it's because of the gas prices. They are going down there to fill up their tanks, especially the Diesel trucks. Some go down there to buy their prescription drugs......These people are not helping out our economy! I think when they cross, they should detained and held in Mexico. If they like it there so much, they should just stay there.

There are many reasons Americans go to Mexico. At times, it is only for a short vacation. Other times it is for business reasons. However, A LOT of Americans do actually do "live" in Mexico by one of two means. Some live on the border or California or Texas and go into Mexico because goods are cheaper there (i.e. - gas, clothes, alcohol, food, etc.). Other Americans (such as my boss) decide to retire there once they earn enough money, because the American dollar is strong in comparison to the cost of living in Mexico. For example, you and your spouse can live LIKE KINGS (no joke) on approximately $20,000 a year in Mexico. This would include being a "Patron" and having a gardener as well as a maid (who would most likely do your cooking as well as your cleaning). You can even buy land and build your own home for about the same. For approximately $60,000 you can own a new condo that would rival the ones in some metropolitan cities. However, that same $20,000 a year in the US could very well qualify you for welfare or other government programs. This is why the rich (or even smart money savers) move to Mexico and stay.

I'd like to comment on Marissa's answer. Americans go to Mexico and get treated like kings because of the money they spend. Is that a fair quote of what she wrote?
Okay, here you go. Get your Government to institute a minimum wage that would decently feed and clothe the people of Mexico and form a Welfare policy for the poorest inhabitants.
If you are unhappy with Americans on your side of the border, keep in mind you admit that THEY bring money with them.
Meanwhile Mexico's poor come here for food stamps, medical care, and any government program to help the individual.
Well, I for one was outraged by the DEMANDS made by non citizens in May, demands!
They should have been protesting in Mexico. The cause may have been just but the city and country were wrong.
Got it?
